Out of Nyack, New York comes a foursome with steady rock beats supporting a hint of New Wave heartache.  Even their name, Regret the Hour, elicits a tinge of melancholy.  Their latest release is ‘The Living Remember,’ a follow-up EP to ‘Another Lonely Year’ which garnered 40,000 YouTube views.  Regret the Hour has been playing NYC venues with members, Nate McCarthy (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Ben McCarthy (lead guitar/vocals), Jesse Yanko (bass/vocals), and Anders Fleming (drums/vocals).

Together for a decade now, Silversun Pickups are best known for
*swelling shoegaze atmospheres – “Lazy Eye”
*explosive rock — “Well Thought out Twinkles”
*groovy fuzz guitar – “Come Back Kid”, and what Girl on Guy host Aisha Tyler called *ferocious dreampop – “Panic Switch”
‘Neck of the Woods’ takes on a new direction all together.

Although Aubert stated in a recent KROQ interview that this album sounds to him “like a horror movie,” the dark vibes are not as obvious as on SSPU’s December 2011 EP, ‘Seasick.’  Rather, Aubert’s subsequent description of the album was more accurate: “It sounds like a desire to want to get in but you can’t.  Or a desire to want to pull out something from the center into your fringe.”

Old time music becomes new with a western edge – in something that might be labeled ‘saloon rock.’  While no particular genre may presently fit, The Chorderoys, a South Carolina band now relocated to Austin, has a sound that is low country, folksy, and bluesy.  They’re somewhat akin to Band of Horses, but genuinely have a sound all their own.  The Chorderoys are comprised of brothers Greg and Jon Denn and Andrew Simmons.  Their September release, ‘No Man’s Land’ is a four track EP recorded at the renowned Arlyn Studios.

In the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter sits the House of Blues, an 800+ capacity venue, the walls of which are covered with nearly 300 pieces of folk art.  Directly above the stage, is an oval emblem of Bo Diddley dressed in glorious white, standing as an angel above a sanctuary under the caption, ‘Who do you love?’ This Friday night crowd loves Cage the Elephant.  The Nashville Indie group is currently touring the U.S. in support of their 2009 sophomore release, ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday.’

Opening for Cage is a group of fellow Tennessee rockers named Bad Cop, featuring drums along with three and four guitars to produce raging spacedelic kick-ass rock and roll.  The frontman stares maniacally into the crowd as if to indicate that it is simply a matter of time before subliminal messages achieve massive mind control. Perhaps someday.  But this night’s crowd belongs to vocalist Matt Shultz and the band, comprised of guitarists Brad Shultz and Lincoln Parish, along with bassist Danial Tichenor and drummer Jared Champion. The Campbell Apartment release titled, ‘In,’ (Nov 2011) features catchy melodies and a down-home attitude, thus drawing comparisons to bands as various as Weezer and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Formed in New York City in 2007, The Campbell Apartment thrilled when their debut album, ‘Insomniac’s Almanac’ was named by The Village Voice as 2008’s 4th best album.  Since then, the group has relocated cross country to San Francisco.  Ari Vais is the singer/songwriter who is joined by Fountains of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter who also acts as producer; Martin Schneider contributes as bassist and Ed Burch plays drums.

Macrodots are not content to stay in place.  Their genuine American rock and roll chords propel them forward in their debut album, ‘The Other Side.’  Macrodots are headed by four-time DIY Music Award-winner lead vocalist Cathy Richardson, who is known for her previous success in being cast as Janis Joplin in the Off Broadway hit Love, Janis.

She later toured the US with Big Brother and the Holding Co. and in 2008 became the lead singer for psychedelic rock originators, Jefferson Starship (with founding member Paul Kantner).  Richardson recently joined with San Francisco guitarist/producer Zack Smith to form Macrodots, who originally recorded 20 songs together, 11 of which formed the 2012 debut release.

Nearly a thousand days after their sophomore album ‘Swoon,’ Los Angeles based indie rockers Silversun Pickups puts out a three-track EP titled ‘Seasick.’  The 2010 Grammy nominee band is headed by Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger on vocals and guitars, and backed by keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Christopher Guanlao.  They are currently working on their third album release, set to drop in spring of 2012.

Silversun Pickups’ characteristic fuzz groove continues, though the band seems to explore the depths of inner darkness a bit more with each release.  Whereas early singles like “Little Lover So Polite” and “Lazy Eye” were incredibly thrilling and fun, “Panic Switch” included spy-agent paranoia.  Now comes “Seasick” which seems most reminiscent of ruminating tracks like “Three Seed” combined with the slight swagger of “Catch and Release.”  Continue reading »

Keeping in line with feel good rock artists like Matchbox Twenty is Melbourne’s goodbyemotel with their latest EP, ‘Wish Your Way.’  Hailed by Inpress Magazine as “one of the finest indie rock bands currently plying their trade,” goodbyemotel formed in 2006 with Gustaf Sjodin Enstrom (vocals & guitars), Tom Marks (bass & vocals), Scott Pioro (guitars & vocals), and Mark Leahy (drums & vocals).

The band has gotten placement on the new Australian feature film, ‘Summer Coda’ as well as being featured in national TV and MTV campaigns for “End Child Slavery.”  US attention has come through placement on the show, “Covert Affairs and Suits” and via the TV series “Gossip Girl” which picked up goodbyemotel’s “Last Flight of the Bat.”
‘Wish Your Way,’ following the band’s 2010 self-titled debut, was recorded by legendary producer Julian Medelsohn (Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Page, Petshop Boys). Continue reading »
