‘I was born strange, with a comet’s name, trying to find a way to exist on this place.’  This is the opening statement by vocalist Haley Bowery on the Manimals’ upcoming debut album, ‘Born Strange,’ due June 19th.  Fast-paced rock and roll accompanies seething reckless vocals to produce a modern day glam driven punk style.

Shortly after forming the Manimals in early 2011, Bowery released her homemade EP, ‘Side of the Hill’ and embarked on a Springtime solo tour of the US and Canada (with fellow singer-songwriter Matthew Pop). Together, Haley & The Manimals have been making their rounds of the NYC downtown clubs for the past year.  Haley Bowery is joined by Patrick Deeney (guitar), Joseph Wallace (bass), and Attis Clopton (drums).  The album also features Matthew Pop on keyboards.

In the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter sits the House of Blues, an 800+ capacity venue, the walls of which are covered with nearly 300 pieces of folk art.  Directly above the stage, is an oval emblem of Bo Diddley dressed in glorious white, standing as an angel above a sanctuary under the caption, ‘Who do you love?’ This Friday night crowd loves Cage the Elephant.  The Nashville Indie group is currently touring the U.S. in support of their 2009 sophomore release, ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday.’

Opening for Cage is a group of fellow Tennessee rockers named Bad Cop, featuring drums along with three and four guitars to produce raging spacedelic kick-ass rock and roll.  The frontman stares maniacally into the crowd as if to indicate that it is simply a matter of time before subliminal messages achieve massive mind control. Perhaps someday.  But this night’s crowd belongs to vocalist Matt Shultz and the band, comprised of guitarists Brad Shultz and Lincoln Parish, along with bassist Danial Tichenor and drummer Jared Champion. Between the Cities are Stars is a project that Kyle Hernandez (guitar/ vocals) and Heather (bass/ vocals) began after moving from their hometown of Fresno, CA to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Their joint interest in music fueled them toward a new experimental sound. Hyper punk rhythms, fuzzed out soundscapes, and spacey psychedelia shine through on the band’s August 2011 self-titled album.  As their bio says, Between the Cities are Stars ‘finds ways to make you move, groove and space out.’

Besides the recent release of a few EP’s and this full length album (on limited edition red cassette), the band has been included on a various compilations with Stellarium, Ringo Deathstarr and many others.  Currently, Between the Cities are Stars is looking forward to writing new songs and playing more shows along the West Coast.  Kyle spoke with Resonance about creating deconstructive pop in a way that’s more than just noise. We approach the time of year when visions of sugar plums begin dancing through our heads.  Despite unfulfilled New Year’s resolutions, we waltz into the holidays with joyful abandon.  This season, the odiously named Regurgitator releases their 7th album irresistible titled, ‘SuperHappyFuntimesFriends.’

Swaying on the back of a camel across the Egyptian desert, you recognize that you have a long ride ahead of you.  The barren landscape changes only slightly as the winds swirl around the timeless landscape.  Your eye focuses on the shifting hues of the sky, first gold and orange, then red and purple.  This is the experience of ‘Sunset Over Cairo.’

Rhythmic and lulling, Listen Lisse releases her third album this month with music she describes as “bittersweet folk punk phased into electric drone.”
A native of New Zealand, now based in London, Lisse can be found performing on both fronts.  Organic folk mingles with edgy punk as Lisse sets insights to music.  The personal quality of her singing suggests that she shares these stories from her own diary.
