Out of Nyack, New York comes a foursome with steady rock beats supporting a hint of New Wave heartache.  Even their name, Regret the Hour, elicits a tinge of melancholy.  Their latest release is ‘The Living Remember,’ a follow-up EP to ‘Another Lonely Year’ which garnered 40,000 YouTube views.  Regret the Hour has been playing NYC venues with members, Nate McCarthy (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Ben McCarthy (lead guitar/vocals), Jesse Yanko (bass/vocals), and Anders Fleming (drums/vocals).

Together for a decade now, Silversun Pickups are best known for
*swelling shoegaze atmospheres – “Lazy Eye”
*explosive rock — “Well Thought out Twinkles”
*groovy fuzz guitar – “Come Back Kid”, and what Girl on Guy host Aisha Tyler called *ferocious dreampop – “Panic Switch”
‘Neck of the Woods’ takes on a new direction all together.

Although Aubert stated in a recent KROQ interview that this album sounds to him “like a horror movie,” the dark vibes are not as obvious as on SSPU’s December 2011 EP, ‘Seasick.’  Rather, Aubert’s subsequent description of the album was more accurate: “It sounds like a desire to want to get in but you can’t.  Or a desire to want to pull out something from the center into your fringe.”

Coinciding with the Spring equinox, liturgical readings announce, “A light shines in the darkness, and the darkness shall not overcome it.”  This Easter season, Lowlakes releases a four-track EP which begins like a call for hope amidst a grey fog.  Carrying a cinematic quality, Lowlakes presents a rare mix of melody and ambience.  Frontman Tom Snowdon takes flight in dreamy sequences while remaining in a low hover just above ground.

This Australian group originally from Alice Springs relocated to Melbourne for the EP production.  Lowlakes’ new self-titled EP was recorded live and mixed to tape in Kunsthaus Records’ private analogue studio. Continue reading »

Cheerful garage-pop laced with a hint of wistfulness characterizes the melody driven sound of Eux Autres.  Literally translated as Them Others, the band name sounds so much nicer in Frech, (pronounced OOZ-OH-TRAH).  Their Feb 28th release is titled ‘Sun Is Sunk’.  This EP was recorded by Jason Quever (Papercuts) who also recorded the Eux Autres’ third album, one which entailed a West Coast tour with Wild Flag and a three week tour of Europe.

Originally formed in 2003 by the brother/sister duo, Heather and Nicholas Larimer, the group later added drummer Yoshi Nakamoto (The Aislers Set, Still Flyin’) in to order to expand their sound.  Continue reading »

Imagine the uplifting sound of the Beach Boys with a melancholy undertone, the retro surfrock of Weezer void of grunge guitars, or the Indie dream pop sound of Yo La Tengo without the plunges into experimental  noise.  Think of those things and you’ve approached the sound of Cleveland based Gomez Addams.  His January release, ‘Summer Viking’ is relaxed and breezy, a work reminiscent of a simpler time.

Keeping in line with feel good rock artists like Matchbox Twenty is Melbourne’s goodbyemotel with their latest EP, ‘Wish Your Way.’  Hailed by Inpress Magazine as “one of the finest indie rock bands currently plying their trade,” goodbyemotel formed in 2006 with Gustaf Sjodin Enstrom (vocals & guitars), Tom Marks (bass & vocals), Scott Pioro (guitars & vocals), and Mark Leahy (drums & vocals).

The band has gotten placement on the new Australian feature film, ‘Summer Coda’ as well as being featured in national TV and MTV campaigns for “End Child Slavery.”  US attention has come through placement on the show, “Covert Affairs and Suits” and via the TV series “Gossip Girl” which picked up goodbyemotel’s “Last Flight of the Bat.”
‘Wish Your Way,’ following the band’s 2010 self-titled debut, was recorded by legendary producer Julian Medelsohn (Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Page, Petshop Boys). Continue reading »

Sleigh bells ring, lights shine in the windows, and Santa laughter sounds through the night air.  It’s the season when even the hardest rocking Grinch grows his heart a couple extra sizes and embraces all things cutesy cuddly.  It’s time for ‘Itsy Bits & Bubbles’ from Twink.

This purely instrumental, incredibly fun sound is put together by musical mad scientist Mike Langlie, who was charmed by the off-kilter tones of a thrift store toy piano.  Twink has produced five prior albums, combining toy instruments with hyperactive rhythm machines, broken music boxes, and circuit-bent electronic gizmos.  Also included are kitchen drawer percussion, and the bleeps and blurps of 8-bit videogames.  Strong melodies, bouncy beats and surprising arrangements make Twink a favorite for use on networks like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central. We approach the time of year when visions of sugar plums begin dancing through our heads.  Despite unfulfilled New Year’s resolutions, we waltz into the holidays with joyful abandon.  This season, the odiously named Regurgitator releases their 7th album irresistible titled, ‘SuperHappyFuntimesFriends.’
