‘I was born strange, with a comet’s name, trying to find a way to exist on this place.’  This is the opening statement by vocalist Haley Bowery on the Manimals’ upcoming debut album, ‘Born Strange,’ due June 19th.  Fast-paced rock and roll accompanies seething reckless vocals to produce a modern day glam driven punk style.

Shortly after forming the Manimals in early 2011, Bowery released her homemade EP, ‘Side of the Hill’ and embarked on a Springtime solo tour of the US and Canada (with fellow singer-songwriter Matthew Pop). Together, Haley & The Manimals have been making their rounds of the NYC downtown clubs for the past year.  Haley Bowery is joined by Patrick Deeney (guitar), Joseph Wallace (bass), and Attis Clopton (drums).  The album also features Matthew Pop on keyboards.

Melodic hard rock comes through in the latest EP from the Chicago based group, Men Who Listen. This four-track release is the Dec 2011 follow-up to their 2009 self-titled  debut. Dan Pokorni is the songwriter/guitarist who formed the group in 2008 on the heals of his own solo release. In speaking about the focus of Men Who Listen, he said, “I always loved hot guitar playing and great musicianship in general, but as I grew older I realized the stuff that had the most staying power was a great song. And that philosophy, unconsciously or not, is what MEN WHO LISTEN is all about. (Muen Magazine).”

Other than founder Dan Pokorni, Men Who Listen includes Jeff Anthony (vocals) as well as various of guest drummers and bass players.  This EP includes contributions from Emmy award winning drummer Greg Potter on the rock ballad “In the Blink of an Eye.” Continue reading »

Macrodots are not content to stay in place.  Their genuine American rock and roll chords propel them forward in their debut album, ‘The Other Side.’  Macrodots are headed by four-time DIY Music Award-winner lead vocalist Cathy Richardson, who is known for her previous success in being cast as Janis Joplin in the Off Broadway hit Love, Janis.

She later toured the US with Big Brother and the Holding Co. and in 2008 became the lead singer for psychedelic rock originators, Jefferson Starship (with founding member Paul Kantner).  Richardson recently joined with San Francisco guitarist/producer Zack Smith to form Macrodots, who originally recorded 20 songs together, 11 of which formed the 2012 debut release.

In this internet age, we are connected instantly to people around the globe.  Yet are we connected to our own selves?  We have access to ideas from every philosophy, but do we have any direction?  In a commercial age overrun by consumerism, how can we tap into creativity?
Ruiz addresses these issues through hard rock music.

With their homeland in the Central European country of Croatia, a country just east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea, this band brings a unique perspective from the philosophical roots of nearby Greece.
Playing as a trio since 2007, Ruiz is comprised of Tomislav Šnidarić (lead vocals, guitar), Marko Kalčić (vocals, bass) and Janko Kezele (vocals, drums).  Their 2009 debut, ‘Erupt!’ featured new wave beats and groovy bass notes set to casually themed catchy tunes.  Progressing in their musical abilities, Ruiz put forth two 2011 releases, both for Geenger Records.  The first was a 4-track EP titled, ‘Draw the Line Never a Square.’  The second was ‘Radio Revolution,’ an album that calls society not so much to revolt but moreso to return to the roots of inter-connection and identity.
Lead singer Tomislav “Tome” spoke to Resonance about Ruiz’ recent releases and  the music’s commentary regarding societal issues today. Continue reading »
