Life’s journey is best when made with someone whom you trust, a person you can learn from and hopefully teach occasionally.  Elika fuses fuzzed-out textures and geometric electronics while forging a pathway through Love, Tragedy, and Defeat.

The Brooklyn duo, Evagelia Maravelias and Brian Wenckenbach, have been recording and releasing music since 2006, the most recent being ‘Snuggle Bunnies.’  Featuring soothing vocals mingled with washes of distant, dreamy synths and guitars, Elika’s March 2012 release (Saint Marie Records) is titled ‘Always the Light.’

Soft vocals whisper against jolts of revving guitars, like a thug speaking low and deliberate commands to surrender or else.  This is Le Recourder Larouge, the musical project of Rei Soto, which deals with the fringe emotions that frequently pose as love.  Possessiveness.  Greed.  Lust.  The passion of these pathos-laden emotions is enhanced with a mixture of hardrock pounding, industrial darkness, and dreamscape atmostpheres.  A series of four EPs are planned, with two already released, titled simply “L” and “E.”  Rei Soto spoke with Resonance about the creative process of a DIY musician, depressing prom music, and lyrical inspiration provided by horror films.

Between the Cities are Stars is a project that Kyle Hernandez (guitar/ vocals) and Heather (bass/ vocals) began after moving from their hometown of Fresno, CA to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Their joint interest in music fueled them toward a new experimental sound. Hyper punk rhythms, fuzzed out soundscapes, and spacey psychedelia shine through on the band’s August 2011 self-titled album.  As their bio says, Between the Cities are Stars ‘finds ways to make you move, groove and space out.’

Besides the recent release of a few EP’s and this full length album (on limited edition red cassette), the band has been included on a various compilations with Stellarium, Ringo Deathstarr and many others.  Currently, Between the Cities are Stars is looking forward to writing new songs and playing more shows along the West Coast.  Kyle spoke with Resonance about creating deconstructive pop in a way that’s more than just noise. Nearly a thousand days after their sophomore album ‘Swoon,’ Los Angeles based indie rockers Silversun Pickups puts out a three-track EP titled ‘Seasick.’  The 2010 Grammy nominee band is headed by Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger on vocals and guitars, and backed by keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Christopher Guanlao.  They are currently working on their third album release, set to drop in spring of 2012.

Silversun Pickups’ characteristic fuzz groove continues, though the band seems to explore the depths of inner darkness a bit more with each release.  Whereas early singles like “Little Lover So Polite” and “Lazy Eye” were incredibly thrilling and fun, “Panic Switch” included spy-agent paranoia.  Now comes “Seasick” which seems most reminiscent of ruminating tracks like “Three Seed” combined with the slight swagger of “Catch and Release.”  Continue reading »

It’s not often a band name comes with a promise. This month however, we get a release from an Atlanta group called Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun.

Their spontaneous experimentation has been dubbed “indie-electro-fuzz rock.”
After three EPs this group signed with Greyday records, which is re-releasing ‘Wildfire,’ the full length album that initially debuted in May.
These twelve tracks present intricate lyrics backed by a fuzz dance groove.  Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun is comprised of Lauren (guitars/ keys/ vocals), Cregg (guitars/ keys/ vocals), Micah (bass/ keys/ vocals) and Jeremy (drums/ electronics).  In 2009, the group quit their full-time careers so they could book, tour, record, and expose their music to as many people as would hear them. Over the past two years they’ve toured an astounding 15-20 dates per month, visiting venues throughout the US Eastern half.
