Together for a decade now, Silversun Pickups are best known for
*swelling shoegaze atmospheres – “Lazy Eye”
*explosive rock — “Well Thought out Twinkles”
*groovy fuzz guitar – “Come Back Kid”, and what Girl on Guy host Aisha Tyler called *ferocious dreampop – “Panic Switch”
‘Neck of the Woods’ takes on a new direction all together.

Although Aubert stated in a recent KROQ interview that this album sounds to him “like a horror movie,” the dark vibes are not as obvious as on SSPU’s December 2011 EP, ‘Seasick.’  Rather, Aubert’s subsequent description of the album was more accurate: “It sounds like a desire to want to get in but you can’t.  Or a desire to want to pull out something from the center into your fringe.”

Life’s journey is best when made with someone whom you trust, a person you can learn from and hopefully teach occasionally.  Elika fuses fuzzed-out textures and geometric electronics while forging a pathway through Love, Tragedy, and Defeat.

The Brooklyn duo, Evagelia Maravelias and Brian Wenckenbach, have been recording and releasing music since 2006, the most recent being ‘Snuggle Bunnies.’  Featuring soothing vocals mingled with washes of distant, dreamy synths and guitars, Elika’s March 2012 release (Saint Marie Records) is titled ‘Always the Light.’

Soft vocals whisper against jolts of revving guitars, like a thug speaking low and deliberate commands to surrender or else.  This is Le Recourder Larouge, the musical project of Rei Soto, which deals with the fringe emotions that frequently pose as love.  Possessiveness.  Greed.  Lust.  The passion of these pathos-laden emotions is enhanced with a mixture of hardrock pounding, industrial darkness, and dreamscape atmostpheres.  A series of four EPs are planned, with two already released, titled simply “L” and “E.”  Rei Soto spoke with Resonance about the creative process of a DIY musician, depressing prom music, and lyrical inspiration provided by horror films.

Sleigh bells ring, lights shine in the windows, and Santa laughter sounds through the night air.  It’s the season when even the hardest rocking Grinch grows his heart a couple extra sizes and embraces all things cutesy cuddly.  It’s time for ‘Itsy Bits & Bubbles’ from Twink.

This purely instrumental, incredibly fun sound is put together by musical mad scientist Mike Langlie, who was charmed by the off-kilter tones of a thrift store toy piano.  Twink has produced five prior albums, combining toy instruments with hyperactive rhythm machines, broken music boxes, and circuit-bent electronic gizmos.  Also included are kitchen drawer percussion, and the bleeps and blurps of 8-bit videogames.  Strong melodies, bouncy beats and surprising arrangements make Twink a favorite for use on networks like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central. There’s a moment in the dim light of dawn when we first open our eyes and remind ourselves who we are, where we left off yesterday and what we have planned for the hours ahead.  This is the moment captured by Voletta in their second EP, ‘Soft Focus’ released October 20.  This two piece band from Philadelphia mixes fuzzy industrial vibes with floaty shoegaze soundscapes.

Originally formed in 2004, Voletta is comprised of Joe Sheairs (guitar, vocals, bass) and Andre Comfort (drum kit, drum machines, synth) who have been playing together since 2009. Continue reading »

It’s not often a band name comes with a promise. This month however, we get a release from an Atlanta group called Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun.

Their spontaneous experimentation has been dubbed “indie-electro-fuzz rock.”
After three EPs this group signed with Greyday records, which is re-releasing ‘Wildfire,’ the full length album that initially debuted in May.
These twelve tracks present intricate lyrics backed by a fuzz dance groove.  Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun is comprised of Lauren (guitars/ keys/ vocals), Cregg (guitars/ keys/ vocals), Micah (bass/ keys/ vocals) and Jeremy (drums/ electronics).  In 2009, the group quit their full-time careers so they could book, tour, record, and expose their music to as many people as would hear them. Over the past two years they’ve toured an astounding 15-20 dates per month, visiting venues throughout the US Eastern half.
