Soft vocals whisper against jolts of revving guitars, like a thug speaking low and deliberate commands to surrender or else.  This is Le Recourder Larouge, the musical project of Rei Soto, which deals with the fringe emotions that frequently pose as love.  Possessiveness.  Greed.  Lust.  The passion of these pathos-laden emotions is enhanced with a mixture of hardrock pounding, industrial darkness, and dreamscape atmostpheres.  A series of four EPs are planned, with two already released, titled simply “L” and “E.”  Rei Soto spoke with Resonance about the creative process of a DIY musician, depressing prom music, and lyrical inspiration provided by horror films.

Between the Cities are Stars is a project that Kyle Hernandez (guitar/ vocals) and Heather (bass/ vocals) began after moving from their hometown of Fresno, CA to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Their joint interest in music fueled them toward a new experimental sound. Hyper punk rhythms, fuzzed out soundscapes, and spacey psychedelia shine through on the band’s August 2011 self-titled album.  As their bio says, Between the Cities are Stars ‘finds ways to make you move, groove and space out.’

Besides the recent release of a few EP’s and this full length album (on limited edition red cassette), the band has been included on a various compilations with Stellarium, Ringo Deathstarr and many others.  Currently, Between the Cities are Stars is looking forward to writing new songs and playing more shows along the West Coast.  Kyle spoke with Resonance about creating deconstructive pop in a way that’s more than just noise. Dynamic and lyrically intense, The Trophy Fire mingles lovely harmonies with waves of power pop, creating a blend suitable for a variety of listeners.

Vocalist Ben Flanagan is backed by brothers Adam and John Schuman.  Playing together since gradeschool, The Trophy Fire released their debut in 2008 titled, ‘A Lifetime in the Middle of the Ocean.’  The Trophy Fire released their ‘Armor’ EP this past June, and traveled up and down the west coast to play a few live shows in support of it.  Their songs have appeared on multiple soundtracks, including the 9/11 10th anniversary Soundcheck Playlist and Escaping the Ordinary’s compilation release, featuring bands that need to be heard.  ‘Modern Hearts’ touches on loneliness (“The Rent”), hopelessness (“Comrades”, “Sameside”), and straying from our own ideals (“Further than We Know”).  Despite the bleakness of the lyrical material though, the music portrays incredible beauty and power.
Ben Flanagan spoke to Resonance via phone about California’s music comraderie, the current fear to create, and The Trophy Fire’s new album ‘Modern Hearts.’ Continue reading »

In this internet age, we are connected instantly to people around the globe.  Yet are we connected to our own selves?  We have access to ideas from every philosophy, but do we have any direction?  In a commercial age overrun by consumerism, how can we tap into creativity?
Ruiz addresses these issues through hard rock music.

With their homeland in the Central European country of Croatia, a country just east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea, this band brings a unique perspective from the philosophical roots of nearby Greece.
Playing as a trio since 2007, Ruiz is comprised of Tomislav Šnidarić (lead vocals, guitar), Marko Kalčić (vocals, bass) and Janko Kezele (vocals, drums).  Their 2009 debut, ‘Erupt!’ featured new wave beats and groovy bass notes set to casually themed catchy tunes.  Progressing in their musical abilities, Ruiz put forth two 2011 releases, both for Geenger Records.  The first was a 4-track EP titled, ‘Draw the Line Never a Square.’  The second was ‘Radio Revolution,’ an album that calls society not so much to revolt but moreso to return to the roots of inter-connection and identity.
Lead singer Tomislav “Tome” spoke to Resonance about Ruiz’ recent releases and  the music’s commentary regarding societal issues today. Continue reading »

Exit 451, funk rock, new wave, pop rock, The Sea above the Sky

As we journey through the waters of life, we navigate toward our hopes and dreams. Life can be topsy turvy for a time, but ultimately we keep the horizon in view and travel ever onward.  Exit 451 puts this life voyage into a musical ebb and flow.

“Seek it all and follow your calling” says “Where the Sea Meets the Sky.”  We do our best to steer clear of turbulent waters.  And yet, the most beautiful moments of life sometimes require that we face the storms head on.  “Western Child” with its childbirth references, calls us to “give like never before” saying “it’s time to free some of my love.”
The Fall 2010 debut ‘The Sea above the Sky’ blends widely popular Duran Duran / Tears for Fears new wave elements with quirkier Queen style funk rock sounds.  Weaving ambient and experimental threads into the retro fabric, Exit 451 creates a unique modern day pop rock sound.
Based in Montreal, Canada, Exit 451 consists primarily of brothers Alain (guitars, keyboards, piano, arrangements) and Martin Avon (bass, arrangements) and JP Alepins (lyrics, vocals, piano).  To capture the essence of their debut album, the trio recorded ‘The Sea above the Sky’ during a one-month closed retreat at Studio 451.
For the album, Steve Nistor (Daniel Lanois’ tour drummer) recorded all drum and percussion tracks. Two drum kits were used, one of which was Jeremy Gara’s (Arcade Fire) C&C kit which Gara graciously lent to the band for the recording sessions. Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan’s producer) also contributed to the recording,  lending his vintage guitars and amps to the band.  Out of the 12 complete songs recorded, 10 were carefully chosen for the album.
JP Alepins spoke to Resonance about the album’s essence and the meaning behind, ‘The Sea above the Sky.’

A blend of electronica beats, shoegaze fuzz, and interludes of ambience Elika offers insightful lyrics coupled with strong rhythms.  Elika’s calming vocals feel like the warmth of a favorite shall comforting you amidst the restless stirrings of the day’s commotion.

This Brooklyn DIY duo is Evagelia Maravelias (vocals, synths, drums, illustration) and Brian Wenckebach (guitar, bass, synths, production).  They recorded, mixed, and self-produced their second full length album, ‘Snuggle Bunnies,’ released in late 2010.  Elika has opened for their friends Ulrich Schnauss at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC and Asobi Seksu at The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.  Their multi-genre musings have been well received by audiences in the USA as well as the Canada, the UK, and Peru.  Eva and Brian spoke to Resonance about genre trends, album symmetry, and the art of naming albums.

Perhaps because I live in one of the top rainiest cities of America, I find myself quite often flipping through radio stations only to recall the statement on my vehicle’s back window: I’d Rather Be Listening to Otan Vargas.  Vargas’ debut, released at year’s end, 2009, is a well crafted acoustic grunge album which I find is best suited for rainy days.

Somber and achingly honest, Alone examines angles of solitude while revealing a ray of hope.  Preparing a new EP, Otan Vargas spoke to Resonance about living his dream as a musician in America.
