With a sound that’s both epic and intimate, Theft is setting out to steal hearts nationwide.  Triuphant rhythms and layered guitars combine with lush vocals and vulnerable lyrics to create a soundscape more suitable for arena than club venues.  Theft’s debut album, ‘The Hard Way,’ released September 27th, is part one of a dual album debut, as the release of ‘For Your Rainy Heart’ quickly followed on November 29th.

Based in Los Andgeles and inspired by Brit rock, Theft is comprised of Matt McCartie (vocals), Daley Hake (guitar), Ashton Likes (bass), and Austen Hooks (drums).  Theft’s accomplishments include writing an original score for the award-winning documentary show, “True Life,” and landing their single, “Breathing Underwater” as the theme song for the intervention series, “Gone Too Far.” Continue reading »

Sleigh bells ring, lights shine in the windows, and Santa laughter sounds through the night air.  It’s the season when even the hardest rocking Grinch grows his heart a couple extra sizes and embraces all things cutesy cuddly.  It’s time for ‘Itsy Bits & Bubbles’ from Twink.

This purely instrumental, incredibly fun sound is put together by musical mad scientist Mike Langlie, who was charmed by the off-kilter tones of a thrift store toy piano.  Twink has produced five prior albums, combining toy instruments with hyperactive rhythm machines, broken music boxes, and circuit-bent electronic gizmos.  Also included are kitchen drawer percussion, and the bleeps and blurps of 8-bit videogames.  Strong melodies, bouncy beats and surprising arrangements make Twink a favorite for use on networks like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central. (PRIVATE) NOSTALGHIA- I Am Robot, Hear Me Glitch- LIVE SESSION from Ciscandra Nostalghia on Vimeo.

A thousand ways to mourn what’s lost, what never was.  A thousand you’s, a thousand me’s, a thousand years, none with us.  And I sit down by my bedside, think of all the things I’ve done, out of pain, out of rage, cursing out the rising sun.  You put a gun right to my head, blew me up, and found me dead.  All those nasty things you said.  All those bullshit words you fed.  If only I were less, if only you were more.  If only the door would open to understanding.  We keep demanding to be heard, yet refuse to listen.

And all the while, skin glistens in the moonlight.  Now I am robot, hear me glitch.  Watch me tame my inner bitch.  I am robot, hear me glitch.  Watch me cure the human itch.

I fear I might.  You hope I won’t.  Don’t trust who I am.  A friend, a lover, another person altogether.  Pull yourself together.  I would if you’d hand me the pieces.  Scattered, tattered.  Doesn’t matter anymore.  A thousand you’s, a thousand me’s, a thousand years, none with us.  I’m un-healthy, but I’m focused.  You can see it in my eyes.  I am crying, but I’m smiling.  You can hear it when I sigh.  If I gave you all these tears, you would need a thousand years just to trace out all the fears of what has gone, left me behind.  If only I were more, if only you were less.  If only this mess would be set right.

And all the while, skin glistens in the moonlight.  Now I am robot, hear me glitch.  Watch me tame my inner bitch.  I am robot, hear me glitch.  Watch me cure the human itch.  Press the button, let me live.

Hear “I Am Robot, Hear Me Glitch” as the title track on Nostalghia’s 2010 album.  Nostalghia’s ’Cool for Chaos’ EP is due December 3rd.

When will you regain your humanity?

There are days, months, or perhaps even years when we sense a haunting presence, bothered by something that cannot be seen with our eyes or felt with our fingertips.   Radiolab addresses this distressing invisible entity.  Sensuous and experimental, Radiolab is an Indie duo from Frederick, Maryland.  Dane Di Pierro (multi-intrumentalist / programming) joined up with vocalist Meghan Redding in early 2010. Combining elements of indie rock and electronica, and occasional samples from film, Radiolab gives new meaning to the term ‘music artist.’

‘Phantom Limbs’ is the October follow up EP to their 2010 album, “Sometimes Casual Confusion’, both released through Tunecore. Continue reading »

Off the corner of Hollywood’s Silverlake and Sunset Boulevards you will find Silverlake Lounge, a dark bar & stage with minimal seating.  It’s not the most inviting place, but if you are interested in hearing new music in close quarters, this is the place to be.  Based in San Francisco, The Trophy Fire is among several bands set to take the stage.  This L.A. gig is the final show of this powerpop trio’s northeast/west coast tour.

A couple dozen people have arrived, heard a few songs already, and gotten their drinks; they are ready and eager for what’s next. Continue reading »

There’s a moment in the dim light of dawn when we first open our eyes and remind ourselves who we are, where we left off yesterday and what we have planned for the hours ahead.  This is the moment captured by Voletta in their second EP, ‘Soft Focus’ released October 20.  This two piece band from Philadelphia mixes fuzzy industrial vibes with floaty shoegaze soundscapes.

Originally formed in 2004, Voletta is comprised of Joe Sheairs (guitar, vocals, bass) and Andre Comfort (drum kit, drum machines, synth) who have been playing together since 2009. Continue reading »
