Blink 182, Up All Night

Everyone lies and cheats their wants and needs and still believes their heart.  You can tell me to trust no one and honesty is overrated, but I still believe in truth.

Let me get this straight, do you want me here?  Tell me to leave and I will.
As I struggle through each and every year.  But I’ll think of you over and over.
And all these demons, they keep me up all night.  And believe me, the night is long.
They keep me up all night.  When will I ever rest?
They keep me up all night.  How long must I wait for daylight?

And everyone lives to tell the tale of how we die alone some day.  Let me not be alone in death.  Be there waiting for me.  Esperame.

Let me get this straight, do you want me here?  I’ll never let you go, if you promise not to fade away. Never fade away.

Many albums claim to be genre-defying, but few truly are.  London-based songwriter and film composer, Chris Letcher released his unique and appealing full-length album, ‘Spectroscope’ September 20th, following his debut ‘Frieze’ (2007) and EP ‘Harmonium’ (2008).

Letcher’s songs appeared in the feature film The Bang Bang Club (2010) starring Ryan Phillipe.  He also recently completed the score for a BBC adaptation of the DH Lawrence novel, Women in Love, in addition to scoring a six-part serial drama for Sky1. Other recent film music credits include HOUR, a film made in collaboration with photographer, Tim Wainwright, and My Black Little Heart, made with director Claire Angelique and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours).
Recorded and mixed in London by Finn Eiles (My Bloody Valentine, Jack Penate, Razorlight), ‘Spectroscope’ extends Letcher’s use of abundant orchestration. Bass clarinets, string and brass sections, mbiras and singing saws enfold drum machines and 1970s synthesizers to buttress an album of pop influenced songs.  Letcher’s soundtrack work shines through in the instrumentation on ‘Spectroscope’ — from the lush string section finishing “Seeing Things” to the harp, trombone and French horns that form a musical bed for “Starrrs.” Continue reading »

Coldplay, Paradise

When she was just a girl, She expected the world, But it flew away from her reach.
“Too far away for me to hold. Too far away. Guess I’ll let it go.”
When exactly did I decide to give up on life? Is it all downhill from here? Retired from love at 26. Retired from hope at 36. Tired and tired and tired again.   Have faith, says the atheist to the prayer warrior. Have faith.

Dreamed of para-para-paradise, Every time she closed her eyes.
“Too far away for me to hold. Too far away. Guess I’ll let it go.”
Paradise was full of holes and never-could-be’s. Romeo and Juliet never would have made it far. Maria and Antone would have had to move to another country for their love to survive, and once the children came, life would have gotten really rough. True love doesn’t exist. Do you think Rose and Jack would have made it work once they got to America? Would she have really been able to give up her high class upbringing to make it work with some fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants street rat? Who knows. Yet all the fairy tales continue in this way.  And I continue to dream.

Life goes on, It gets so heavy, I dream of para-para-paradise…

Exit 451, funk rock, new wave, pop rock, The Sea above the Sky

As we journey through the waters of life, we navigate toward our hopes and dreams. Life can be topsy turvy for a time, but ultimately we keep the horizon in view and travel ever onward.  Exit 451 puts this life voyage into a musical ebb and flow.

“Seek it all and follow your calling” says “Where the Sea Meets the Sky.”  We do our best to steer clear of turbulent waters.  And yet, the most beautiful moments of life sometimes require that we face the storms head on.  “Western Child” with its childbirth references, calls us to “give like never before” saying “it’s time to free some of my love.”
The Fall 2010 debut ‘The Sea above the Sky’ blends widely popular Duran Duran / Tears for Fears new wave elements with quirkier Queen style funk rock sounds.  Weaving ambient and experimental threads into the retro fabric, Exit 451 creates a unique modern day pop rock sound.
Based in Montreal, Canada, Exit 451 consists primarily of brothers Alain (guitars, keyboards, piano, arrangements) and Martin Avon (bass, arrangements) and JP Alepins (lyrics, vocals, piano).  To capture the essence of their debut album, the trio recorded ‘The Sea above the Sky’ during a one-month closed retreat at Studio 451.
For the album, Steve Nistor (Daniel Lanois’ tour drummer) recorded all drum and percussion tracks. Two drum kits were used, one of which was Jeremy Gara’s (Arcade Fire) C&C kit which Gara graciously lent to the band for the recording sessions. Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan’s producer) also contributed to the recording,  lending his vintage guitars and amps to the band.  Out of the 12 complete songs recorded, 10 were carefully chosen for the album.
JP Alepins spoke to Resonance about the album’s essence and the meaning behind, ‘The Sea above the Sky.’

Not Again, Staind

You feel like you’re falling.
Been staring over the edge so long.  Is the ground rising?  Am I just dizzy?  That final step.  That final fatal step forward.  Shut my eyes, shut this out.  Make it all go away.  Don’t remind me.
And you fall apart in front of me again.  Get yourself together.
Will you hold the shards as I glue them piece by piece?
Denial isn’t the way to forgiveness.
If you knew all that I’ve done, all I have failed to do, would you still think I look like you?
You always swore that I was wrong.
And how could you be right when you never really knew the truth?
Not again.  It’s not a matter if I care.
What do I care if you care?  You give me your heart, oozing a bloody mess in my hand.  What am I to do with that?
Toe to toe I stand in front of you again.
Not again.
Eye to eye with the truth inside us.  Not again.  Can we handle the truth of ourselves?  Not again.  Now and forevermore?
What an intricate web you’re weaving, again and again.
Stay trapped with me, stay.  Or else free me from this sticky snare of mine.

Gold Beach: ‘Habibti’ — wooing neosoul

‘Habibti’ is the first-batch release of Gold Beach’s recordings collection.   Titled after an Arabic term for “beloved” this album woos the listener with breezy vocals that whirl around wind-chime instrumentals.

This musical experiment has been developed over the past couple years by singer/ guitarist Michael Winningham and drummer Tony Daugherty.  Though the two grew up on the same street in Houston, TX and began writing music together at age fourteen, both have contributed their talents to other bands until a change was called for.  “We wanted to see what would happen if we didn’t rely on our comfort zones to create music,” says Winningham.
Using the recording studio for their music writing environment, Winningham and Daugherty patiently sculpted their musical presence and personality.  Over 25 songs were recorded in various ways and with various people, but only 11 tracks were kept together to create ‘Habibti’ which includes creative contributions by Jeremy Gomez (bass), Evan Jacobs (synthesizers/ keyboards/ piano), and Henna Chou (cello) among others.  This Austin, TX duo plans to perform regionally, most notably at the upcoming Austin City Limits festival, with national tour dates soon to come.

Wiretree: ‘Make Up’ — world-embracing britpop

At this time of new seasons and school years, Wiretree releases easy going pop music so happy, you want to let all bygones be bygones and just embrace the world.  Their third album, ‘Make Up’ comes out today, September 6, 2011 on Cobaltworks.

Prior releases include Bouldin (2007), and Luck (2009) which landed on various year-end best-of lists (Blurt, Absolute Powerpop).  Blurt Magazine described Wiretree’s sound as “Vintage ‘60s pop-sike and Velvet Underground-esque choogle to paisley underground-tinted ‘80s stylings and latterday indie rock with a distinctive anthemic edge.”  That’s a mouthful to elaborate on Blurt’s label of the band as “Best Kept Secret.”
Orinated as a solo project in 2007, Wiretree developed into a full band as songwriter Kevin Peroni recruited his wife Rachel on bass, Joshua Kaplan on lead guitar, and Daniel Blanchard on drums.  Pedal steel guitar player Charlie Murphy rounds out the group on occasional live performances.  Wiretree’s influences include The Shins, ELO, The Kinks, Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, David Bowie, Sparklehorse and lots of 90’s Britpop/rock.  In fact, the bio demanded a double take to be certain the group is indeed from the US southern city Austin, TX.  After their CD release, Wiretree is heading up to Dallas and Denton, then briefly over to Europe, hitting a few cities in Spain, Paris and of course, the UK.
